What's Happening in Alachua County this January

January 2026 Newsletter



Alachua Community Collective aims to keep you informed about free local events and area resources. These can be found on our community calendar and we encourage you to use the form to submit an event we should know about!

 

In addition to sharing events around the county, ACC was able to host the following events in 2025:

November- Monthly Community Meeting feat. CyberSecurity info session

December- Family Joy Market, Monthly Community Meeting feat. GAAP Hygiene Supply Drive

 

We look forward to organizing many more events, workshops, supply drives, and more in 2026. Join us online or in person to build community and learn all about what's happening in Alachua County.

January is National Braille Literacy Month

Did you know that the Alachua County Library District (ACLD) has a Braille collection?

 

All ACLD items can be placed on hold via the online catalog, or by calling any of your local Alachua County Library branches

 

If you qualify for the service, you can also get a lot of great materials through the National Library Service (for the Blind and Print Disabled). They can be reached at 1-888-657-7323

 

The state of Florida has a Division of Blind Services in the Florida Department of Education that can also be of service.

The Nehemiah Project is hosting a Cold Weather Supply Drive until January 31st.

 

Items are distributed to those in need. You can visit their office or call 855-352-7337 to arranage a drop off time.


The Gainesville Free Store is a "pop-up" FREE STORE where EVERYTHING is free. Created with those most marginalized in mind, but all are welcome.

 

Located at the Civic Media Center, this event runs from 2:00-5:00pm on the 3rd Saturday of every month.

Florida Arbor Day Events

 

Did you know that Florida celebrates two Arbor Days?

 

“In Florida, we celebrate Arbor Day in January because the shorter days and cooler temperatures are the perfect conditions for planting trees, but it's is also a great time to study trees,” said Alachua County Arborist Lacy Holtzworth.

Free native trees of all shapes and sizes, as well as fruit trees will be given out while supplies last! 



Join the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department for an Arbor Day Celebration where you’ll learn how to properly plant and care for trees!

 

Enjoy guest speakers, a hands-on planting demonstration, and receive a free flowering or pollinator tree for participating families.


Guest presentations, light refreshments, spout giveaways (first come, first served, 1 per family), and tree planting guidelines.
